Liquid vs. Granular Septic Treatments

For those homeowners who are aware of the importance of maintaining healthy bacteria activity within their septic tanks, there are many options for them to consider.  In today’s day and age, with household cleaners and water consumption being what they are, it is no wonder that more homeowners are experiencing septic system failure that ever before throughout history.  Finding the right septic cleaning solution can seem uninteresting and mundane, but failing to do so could cost you tens of thousands of dollars in septic tank repairs.  Read this article to learn more about the differences between liquid and granular septic system treatments and which one is right for you.

As is the case with all treatments and cleaners, they evolve as science makes advancements within a given industry.  This is the case with septic tank cleaners.  There has never been a greater need for homeowners to treat their septic system than there is right now.  Household cleaners combined with the amount of household water consumption have pushed septic systems to the brink, resulting in septic system failures increasing by over 34% the past two years alone.

Liquid septic treatments have been on the market for years, in fact, many of the most commonly recognized brands are liquid treatments, but that doesn’t mean that they are the most effective.  Think about it.  It is a liquid.  By definition, it finds the path of least resistance into your septic tank, and as soon as more fluid is flushed or drained into the tank, it is diluted and sent directly into the drain field and out of the septic tank.  When households consumed far less water, as they did in the past, these liquids would remain in the system longer, but nowadays are all but useless.

As septic tank treatments evolved into granular formulas, we saw these bacteria and enzymes being deposited throughout the pipes and septic tank, setting to the bottom and remaining there to digest and liquefy household waste.  Obviously this is the point.  It is for this reason that you are seeing more granular septic maintenance programs, even ones that are a simple as a flush of your toilet.

It is not just the monthly maintenance that should be granular.  It is always a good idea to start off any septic treatment regimen with a granular septic shock.  These shocks cost more than monthly treatments, but they deliver a boost of bacteria to jump start your septic tank and restore it to optimal performance.  Again, there are liquid shocks on the market that are as large as 5 gallon buckets.  Do not let the amount of liquid sway you, it will still wash away.  Manufacturers of these shocks know this and try to convince you that 5 gallons of the product will change things.  Look if you want to risk it, go ahead, but I reserve the right to say I told you so.

Times change, behavior changes, cleaners and household detergents change.  It is no different with septic tank treatments.  There was a time and place for liquid septic cleaning solutions, but those days are gone.  Do not trust your largest, longest investment of your life to a “has been.” The septic tank failure issues facing homeowners are real and should be trusted to a real granular treatment.
